Journey Management | A Program Development Guideline

The purpose of this guideline is to help organizations in the oil and gas sector design and implement an effective journey management program. The goal of the guideline is to assist in assessing journey risk exposures and in minimizing unnecessary trips.

The 2019 edition of Journey Management: A Program Development Guideline has been redesigned to be more user-friendly and is intended to assist organizations with implementing or updating a Journey Management program that is tailored to their needs and risk profile.

This updated version incorporates references to the Energy Safety Canada's Life Saving Rules, which provide a consistent approach in the prevention of serious injuries and fatalities.

This guide is not intended to be prescriptive, but to give an overview of aspects to consider in a program, with a focus on areas that are commonly overlooked or under-developed.  

The Need for Journey Management

Driving-related incidents continue to be a leading cause of fatalities in the energy sector, according to data from WCB Alberta. Journey management is an effective way to understand and control risk which, in turn, improves worker safety.

While the Program Development Guide advises on the design or improvement of a program, the resources below are practical tools that can be downloaded, used as templates, or customized for use in a program.

  • Energy Safety Canada's customizable Journey Management Plan.
  • Presentation from Energy Safety Canada's Journey Management roll out event. 
  • TripCheck is a free online planning tool available. The questions are basic but comprehensive, and the tool can email a copy of the assessment to the worker or supervisor for record-keeping. There are offline forms available as well.
  • Road Safety at Work offers a fillable PDF from for online use or may be printed as a hard copy.
