Second Line Supervisor Well Control Refresher


This course is designed for rig managers, wellsite supervisors, drilling engineers or drilling superintendents who are responsible for the execution and supervision of well control operations. This course covers kick warning signs, well control methods, calculations and non-routine well control situations. Participants are also required to demonstrate the proper response to wellbore and equipment problems using live test well equipment or simulators.

On the final day of this course, students are required to attend the Test Well and exam at Energy Safety Canada in Nisku, AB.

  • Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive certificate that is valid for two years
  • Passing grade on exam 70%
  • Effective February 11, 2019 - Bridging of certificate expiry dates will no longer be in effect
  • If you fail the exam following the course, you are allowed one rewrite within a 30-day period. Rewrite fees will apply
  • If you fail the rewrite, you will be required to take the five-day Second Line Supervisor Well Control course, if course is taken within 30 days, retake of test well is not required, and course discount will apply
  • If you fail the Test Well, you must be rescheduled within 30 days of the original course end date. If not completed within 30 days, the full three-day course must be completed. Full course fees apply

Prerequisites

  • Completion of the online Second Line Supervisor Well Control Tutorial provided at time of registration
  • A Second Line Supervisor Well Control Certificate, can be expired but not exceeding two years. (This is in no way an extension to certificate validity and working with an expired ticket is not acceptable to the regulatory authorities. Extending the pre-requisite for a period of time is to facilitate training only)

Requirements

  • Able to identify the appropriate techniques and procedures necessary for proper operation of equipment used in well control
  • Able to apply wellbore pressure concepts, and well control strategies while on bottom, tripping and while out of the hole
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Students must be adequately prepared to participate in English for required course elements
