Process Safety Fundamentals

The International Oil and Gas Petroleum Association (IOGP) has put together Process Safety Fundamentals (PSF).

According to the IOGP these have been “developed to support companies as they seek to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, fatal and high severity process safety events. Designed to support those working in front-line operations, maintenance, and on wells teams, the PSF are informed by data and designed to draw attention to situations that are most likely to lead to process safety event fatalities."

What does Process Safety look like in your organization?

We want to hear from Canada’s industry leaders.

Process Safety Management (PSM) plays a critical role in preventing major incidents and protecting people, assets and communities. Energy Safety Canada’s Process Safety Community of Practice is inviting industry leaders to share their perspective on how PSM is being implemented and sustained across Canadian industry.

This 10–15-minute questionnaire explores how organizations:
  • Define and integrate Process Safety Management
  • Sustain process safety across the organization
  • Measure PSM health, effectiveness and outcomes
  • Assign leadership responsibility and accountability
  • Respond when process-safety risks or “bad news” are identified
  • Address challenges in implementing and sustaining PSM

The questionnaire also explores the outcomes organizations use to assess PSM, including major process-safety risk reduction, critical barrier reliability, process-safety event performance, effectiveness of risk controls, leadership influence, organizational learning, and workforce capability and culture.

Why participate?

Your experience will help Energy Safety Canada understand the current state of PSM across Canada, identify common practices and challenges, and shape future industry resources, education and learning opportunities.

Responses will be kept confidential and aggregated to develop an industry-level picture of current PSM practices. There are no right or wrong answers—we want to understand your organization’s current approach and experience.
