The Perforating Explosives Required Fundamentals (PERF) course provides new workers entering the Canadian well service sector with essential knowledge to work safely with, or around, explosive materials used in wellbore operations. This course is also intended for workers supporting perforating operations, builders of perforation guns or downhole tools containing explosives, individuals who handle, transport or work around explosive material and for wellsite supervisors or engineers who plan or coordinate services involving on site explosives.

Developed to support industry best practices and Canadian regulatory requirements, PERF prepares participants to work under the supervision of a licensed blaster and to support tasks such as transporting explosives, loading perforating guns, assembling explosive components in shop environments and preparing tools for downhole deployment.

Storage and gun loading operations
Wellsite operations for non-blasters

Upon successful completion of this course, a Certificate that is valid for three years will be available to print
The exam consists of 35 questions and passing grade is 80%
Participants are given two attempts at the final exam. It is strongly recommended that all course materials be reviewed before a second attempt. If both attempts are unsuccessful, participants must re-register for the course. Fees will apply

Why was the PERF course developed?

The Perforating Explosives Require Fundamentals (PERF) course was developed in response to industry-identified gaps in entry-level training for workers handling or working around explosives in well servicing operations

Is this a regulatory mandatory course to work around or with explosives?

No. This is a voluntary course designed to inform and educate workers. It addresses gaps in entry-level training for individuals who work around explosives but do not require explosives permit to perform their duties.

Does this training meet the requirements of the NRCan-ERD Explosives Regulations - Part 9?

The course was developed with industry partners and Subject Matter Experts to align with the industry’s best practices and supplier guidance. The material includes requirements of Part 9 of the Explosives Regulation, but the information exceeds that limited scope.

Is this course approved by NRCan-ERD or Transport Canada?

No. Neither NRCan-ERD nor Transport Canada approves or endorses specific training or providers. They establish training requirements only, and the approval and suitability of training are at the discretion of the employer.
