Empowering the Next Generation: Forum Focuses on Safety for Young and Inexperienced Workers

April 23, 2025

Edmonton, Alberta — Energy Safety Canada, in collaboration with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), hosted a full-day forum at the NAIT Feltham Centre focused on improving workplace safety for young, new, and inexperienced workers.

This free event brought together a diverse group of participants—including students, educators, industry leaders and safety professionals—to explore the unique risks faced by early energy career workers and share proven strategies for mitigation. The forum fostered meaningful dialogue on how to better prepare and protect the next generation of the workforce.

The initiative stems from a creative sentencing project in partnership with the Government of Alberta, young worker advocacy groups and industry stakeholders. The initiative seeks to champion safe practices and reduce preventable workplace incidents involving young and inexperienced workers.

Insights and outcomes from the day’s discussions will be used to develop storyboards and program content for a new Worker Protection guidance video series, scheduled for release in 2026. This series aims to educate and empower both employers and young workers through practical, scenario-based guidance.
