Well Control Fundamentals


The Well Control Fundamentals course is designed for anyone involved in drilling/well servicing operations or planning to obtain foundational knowledge on the topic of well control. Participants will learn about kick recognition, barriers, well control equipment and perform basic volume and pressure calculations related to well control.

The course is a prerequisite requirement for anyone pursuing a Well Service Blowout Prevention Certificate or a Coiled Tubing Well Servicing Blowout Prevention Certificate or for those not needing a certificate but wanting to know more about well control. This course is delivered online.

  • Upon successful completion of this course with a minimum passing grade of 70%, a certificate that is valid for ten years will be available to print.
  • Participants are given two attempts at the final exam. It is strongly recommended to review all course material between attempts. If all attempts are unsuccessful, re-registration into the course is required, fees will apply.
  • Students have access to the course for 90 days from initial registration. If not completed within that time, registration fees will not be reimbursed. (see Cancellation Policy)

Topics Covered:

  • Causes and impacts of blowouts, kick identification, related safety practices and well program requirements.
  • Wellbore volume calculations and rig circulating systems.
  • Wellbore/formation pressures and kick mechanics.
  • Gas expansion associated with kicks.
  • Blowout preventer stack equipment and control systems. 
  • Well classification and BOP stack requirements.

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Currently supported version of your operating System for Windows or Apple
  • Stable internet connection with a supported web browser

  • Speakers / Microphone (headset recommended)
