DATA-DRIVEN AND RESEARCH-BASED
Energy Safety Canada's Life Saving Rules are backed by research and are based on the types of work tasks with the greatest potential for serious injury or fatality. According to statistics from the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) codes for the oil and gas industry, more than 300 fatalities occurred between 2001 and 2017. Despite industry efforts, improvements in the prevention of health and safety incidents have not translated to the elimination of serious injuries and fatalities. In the past 17 years, there have been an average of 20 fatalities per year in Canada's oil and gas industry. More than 80% of these tragic events could have been prevented if Energy Safety Canada's Life Saving Rules were implemented across industry.
A preliminary fatality analysis report is available here.
