Seismic Blaster Safety Training

Learn about the principles of seismic exploration and gain an understanding of the safety practices behind blasting activities.

This course has been developed in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Geophysical Contractors (CAGC) and government representatives from Western Canada to provide a minimum industry training standard for blasting in seismic exploration.

  • Complete the Seismic Blaster Safety Training application form. Applications must be received for approval by Energy Safety Canada at least two working days prior to the course date
  • A separate application form is to be submitted to Saskatchewan Industry and Resources by the participant or employer following successful completion of the Energy Safety Canada training course in order to obtain the Saskatchewan permit. This application must be accompanied by a copy of Energy Safety Canada training certificate, as well as a copy of the participant’s current Standard First Aid Certificate. The application is included with the course materials
  • As per Manitoba Regulation MR217/2006 34.3(d) a person must hold a Manitoba issued Seismic Blaster Certificate in order to blast in Manitoba. Therefore, the interprovincial seismic blaster permit would be accepted as proof of training for the transfer application (see www.gov.mb.ca/labour/safety/train_blast_cert.html) Individuals would need to fill out the transfer application at no cost, accompanied by the interprovincial permit, a current passport quality photo and a criminal record check from there they live.

    • You must be at least 18 years of age
    • You must present government issued photo identification (i.e., driver’s license, passport, etc.) at the start of the course
    • Have a minimum of six months hands-on experience as a blaster’s assistant in the past 36 months immediately preceding the course date
    • Be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
    • Have completed the prescribed Seismic Blaster Safety Training application form and possess current Standard First Aid certification or equivalent

      Note: You may also take this course solely for general informational purposes. In this case, there are no prerequisites and no written examination, and only an Enform Record of Attendance will be issued.

    Energy Safety Canada issues an interprovincial Seismic Blaster’s permit, valid throughout the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta, and British Columbia to those who successfully completed the Energy Safety Canada Seismic Blaster Safety Training Courses

    The permit is accepted as proof of training for the purpose of obtaining a blaster permit/certification in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
