Eligible Occupational Health And Safety Programs

Not all occupational health and safety (OHS) programs are created equal. To meet the requirements to become an Energy Safety Canada External Auditor, the certificate, diploma, or degree program must meet the following requirements:

  • Be issued from an accredited institution
  • Consist of a minimum of 300 hours of classroom instruction and/or self-study
  • Cover the following ten applications-based core competencies:
    • a. Accident Theory
      b. Incident Investigation
      c. Safety Techniques/Technology
      d. Occupational (Industrial) Hygiene
      e. Emergency Preparedness and Response
      f. Risk Management
      g. Ergonomics
      h. OHS Law and Ethics
      i. OHS Legislation/Regulation
      j. Safety Management Systems

Energy Safety Canada has reviewed the following programs to meet the criteria for acceptable educational programs:

Ryerson University BASc - OHS (Please contact the Department of Applied Sciences directly for more information)
Ryerson University* OHS Certificate
University of New Brunswick* COHS - Certificate
University of Fredericton* CHSEP Certificate - Advanced Certificate Level only**

* Indicates programs that are available through distance education

**Please contact Energy Safety Canada's Safety Audits and Certification department before choosing your optional courses and/or practicum within the Advanced Certificate Level to determine their suitability to the existing Energy Safety Canada standard for External Auditor requirements.

If your occupational health and safety certificate, diploma, or degree is not listed and you would like to have it assessed for meeting Energy Safety Canada's External Auditor prerequisite, please call the COR Hotline at 1 (800) 667 5557, option 3 for further direction. Please gather the following information prior to calling:

  • Proof of Program completion (copy of certificate, diploma or degree)
  • Complete list of program transcripts
  • List of courses which includes:
    • Course description
    • Number of hours credited
