Energy Safety Canada announces General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Hugh Hooker to retire

October 7, 2019

Energy Safety Canada is announcing today General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Hugh Hooker’s intention to retire effective year-end.

Hooker has been with Energy Safety Canada and its predecessor Enform since August 2012. He was a steward of the successful merger of Enform and Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) in 2017.

“I am not alone when I say that Hugh has made a remarkable contribution to our organization and to our industry. Energy Safety Canada’s Board of Directors, staff and industry partners have all benefited from Hugh’s guidance, commitment, open approach, deep legal expertise and insightfulness,” said Murray Elliott, President and CEO of Energy Safety Canada. “Through the many ups and downs that our industry has experienced, Hugh has always been a trusted and respected resource. We thank him for his years of service.”

As General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Hooker has been responsible for working closely with Energy Safety Canada’s Board of Directors on corporate governance and with all of the staff on legal and business matters. He was appointed General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Energy Safety Canada in October 2017.

Prior to joining Enform, Hooker spent four decades practicing corporate, commercial and resource law, much of it in senior legal positions in the oil and gas industry throughout North America.

As part of a transition plan, Energy Safety Canada is initiating a search process to identify his successor.

“While it is with mixed emotions that we see Hugh retire, we expect that travelling and playing banjo and golf will only begin to fill some of his well-deserved downtime,” said Elliott.
