New guideline provides companies with a framework for developing and implementing an electrical safety program
CALGARY – Enform, the safety association for Canada’s upstream oil and gas industry, announces a new guideline and safety resource for managing electrical safety, Electrical Safety: A Program Development Guide. The guideline is designed to help companies identify, assess and reduce the risk of exposure to electrical hazards in the workplace through the development and implementation of an electrical safety program, within their occupational health and safety management system.
"The new program development guide makes a significant contribution to worker safety in the oil and gas industry. It simplifies the complex subject of electrical safety, and it provides guidance for both large and small companies across our diverse industry," says Tom Morin, Team Leader, Electrical Safety and Regulatory Compliance at Cenovus and member of Enform’s Electrical Safety Guideline Development Working Committee. "Whether you’re an exploration and production company, a well service company, or operating heavy equipment at a construction site, there’s something in it for everyone."
The Electrical Safety: A Program Development Guide provides companies with a framework for developing an electrical safety program and outlines how companies may use this guideline to perform a gap analysis on their existing preventive and protective control measures. The guideline includes templates, processes, tools and additional resources to improve existing programs.
"Enform’s guideline on electrical safety provides guidance on creating an electrical safety program that references the CSA Z462 Workplace electrical safety Standard and provides credible information and guidance to help organizations mitigate or reduce the risk of potential exposure to electrical hazards for their workers," says Terry Becker, P.Eng.,member of Enform’s Electrical Safety Guideline Development Working Committee, and President and CEO at ESPS Electrical Safety Program Solutions INC. "The guideline will prove to be a valuable asset in establishing sustainable and measurable performance related to the management of arc flash and shock hazards."
